hololive production is a virtual talent brand operated by COVER Corporation, and one of the two largest VTuber agencies in Japan alongside NIJISANJI. Its talents stream mainly on YouTube in Japanese, English and Indonesian. In September 2026, on its 9th anniversary, COVER announced a new logo and a plan to unify the “hololive” brand across its regional and group labels.

At a glance

  • Operator: COVER Corporation (CEO: Motoaki Tanigo)
  • Started: September 7, 2017, when Tokino Sora debuted as the first talent
  • Main groups: hololive (Japan), hololive Indonesia, hololive English, hololive DEV_IS and Holostars
  • Listing: COVER listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in March 2023

History

According to Wikipedia, COVER was founded on June 13, 2016, and Tokino Sora debuted on September 7, 2017 using the company’s avatar capture software. The Japan branch’s generations debuted in turn: 1st Generation in May and June 2018, 2nd Generation from August 2018, 3rd Generation (“hololive Fantasy”) in July and August 2019, 4th Generation around the end of 2019, 5th Generation in August 2020 and 6th Generation in late 2021. On December 2, 2019, the hololive, Holostars and INNK Music divisions were consolidated under the “hololive production” name.

Overseas, hololive Indonesia began in April 2020 and hololive English in September 2020. On October 22, 2020, Gawr Gura became the first hololive member to reach 1 million YouTube subscribers, and in July 2021 she became the first VTuber to reach 3 million, per Wikipedia.

Scale and events

Wikipedia reports that, as of May 2025, the agency managed 88 active VTubers across its Japanese, Indonesian and English branches, with more than 80 million combined subscribers. Its flagship live event is the hololive fes. series: the 1st fes. “Nonstop Story” was held at Toyosu PIT on January 24, 2020, and Wikipedia says the July 2024 hololive SUPER EXPO and 5th fes. drew over 86,000 attendees.

2026: the road to the 10th anniversary

On September 7, 2026, COVER announced three changes: a refreshed logo that keeps the triangle and blue motifs, a single unified “hololive” brand across regions and groups, and “Visual Updates” for talents rolled out over several years. It also announced the streaming app hololive raku and the production’s first TV anime. See our articles on the 10th anniversary countdown and on Odekake hololive.
