Horror Game Icon Ao Oni Becomes a Silent VTuber, Debuting October 30
Ao Oni, the blue demon from one of Japan’s best-known indie horror games, is becoming a VTuber. LiTMUS announced in a press release dated October 23, 2026 (distributed through PR TIMES) that the character will start streaming on YouTube, with a debut broadcast on Friday, October 30 from 20:00 to 22:00 JST. The twist is the format: the character is meant to play horror games in complete silence, so viewers hear only the game itself.

What was announced
The press release, which AppBank and Denfaminico Gamer also covered, describes the project as a character-led channel whose stated concept is “supporting horror games.” The plan is to cover everything from well-known releases to smaller indie titles. The avatar is a Live2D model, and according to AppBank it has a “surreal” presence, with full-body reactions to what happens on screen.
The signature feature is the silence. The character does not talk, so the stream consists of game audio and footage, plus whatever viewers type into chat. Viewers can also post game requests and comments, which the release says makes the streams interactive. The intended audience is fans of the original game, horror fans in general and ordinary game-stream viewers.
For the debut, the channel will play Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The release describes it as a Sengoku-flavored survival action game set in early Edo-period Kyoto, with a young Miyamoto Musashi who has gained oni power. Capcom’s own release notice, published in July 2026, lists the game for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a release date of September 4, 2026. The pairing of an oni-themed character and an oni-themed game appears deliberate, although the announcement does not say so.
Background
Ao Oni was made by the Japanese indie developer noprops using RPG Maker XP. The player hides from a blue demon in a closed Western-style mansion while solving puzzles. The press release dates its first release to 2004, while the English-language Wikipedia entry describes a November 2008 release followed by updated versions through 2011, so the origin date varies by source.
What is clearer is how the game spread. It grew largely through other people’s playthroughs and livestreams. Wikipedia says videos on Niconico and YouTube passed 50 million views by 2013, and the games have reached more than 34 million downloads. The games site Automaton credits PewDiePie’s 2011 playthrough with helping the game reach audiences outside Japan. The franchise has since expanded into films, novels, a manga and an anime.
LiTMUS, the company behind the new channel, was founded in December 2021 and describes itself as a game publisher focused on IP and content built for gameplay videos and live streams. It has handled more recent Ao Oni versions. Wikipedia notes a 2024 remaster published by LiTMUS for Steam and Nintendo Switch, and Automaton reported that LiTMUS’s Absolute Fear AOONI, a first-person 3D reboot released on Steam on April 26, 2024, was the first entry in the series officially playable in English and Chinese. That earlier release suggests the company has been courting overseas players for some time.
What it means for overseas viewers
The silent format is unusually friendly to non-Japanese audiences. Much of the language barrier in Japanese VTuber streams comes from fast spoken commentary, and here there is none. Viewers anywhere can follow the action, and the avatar’s reactions carry the personality. The chat and game-request features may still be conducted mainly in Japanese, and the release does not say whether requests are accepted in other languages.
The broadcast time falls in Friday morning for North America and Friday late morning to early afternoon in Europe, so it is reachable live from many regions. The release does not mention subtitles, archives or English-language channel information. YouTube streams are normally available as archives afterward, but that is general platform behavior and not something the announcement confirms.
What we don’t know yet
- Who, if anyone, performs the character’s movements, and whether the avatar is controlled live or through another method.
- How often the channel will stream after the debut, and whether any streams will be aimed at English-speaking viewers.
- Whether other horror publishers or developers will take part, since the concept leans on supporting horror titles broadly.
- Whether a membership, merchandise or sponsorship plan is attached to the channel.
