Mori Calliope
Mori Calliope (森カリオペ) is a hololive English VTuber who raps, sings and streams as the “Grim Reaper’s first apprentice.” She debuted on September 12, 2020 as a member of hololive English -Myth-, and has since become one of the best-known music-focused VTubers, with major-label releases, anime tie-ins and an overseas solo concert.

Character
Her official profile presents her as the Grim Reaper’s first apprentice, who became a VTuber to collect souls as modern medicine reduces the reaping business. Despite hardcore vocals and a rough speaking style, the profile describes her as gentle and caring toward her friends. Her stream hashtag is #calliolive and her fan-art hashtag is #callillust.
What the content looks like
Calliope is known first as a rapper. Reviewers have noted her profanity-laden rap, and she has said her interest in rap began with Japanese hip hop. Alongside music she streams video games; one well-known episode is her December 2020 request to the publisher Atlus about Persona 3, which she later streamed on YouTube in January 2023.
Music milestones
- 2020–2022 (independent releases via COVER): the Dead Beats EP (October 17, 2020), the single “Cursed Night” (November 2, 2020), the Your Mori. EP (April 4, 2021) and UnAlive (March 21, 2022).
- April 2022: signed with EMI Records, reported as her major-label debut with Universal Music.
- Major-label releases: the Shinigami Note EP (July 20, 2022; Oricon albums chart #9), the album Sinderella (December 16, 2022), described by Wikipedia as her major-label debut album, the Jigoku 6 EP (August 18, 2023), the album Phantomime (August 16, 2024) and the album Disasterpiece (February 6, 2026).
- Anime tie-ins: “Future Island” (July 2023, tied to One Piece volume 106), “Go-Getters” (ending theme for Suicide Squad Isekai, 2024) and “Let’s Just Crash” (second opening theme of the second cour of Gachiakuta, 2025), whose music video was her first fully 3D animated one.
Live and overseas activity
Her first solo concert, “New Underworld Order,” took place on July 21, 2022 at Toyosu Pit in Tokyo. Her second solo concert, “Grimoire,” was held at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles; the official event page bills it as the first hololive concert starring a single performer overseas and outside Japan, and it offered paid streaming for viewers abroad. In 2021 she took part in a North American hololive English tour that included Calgary Expo and Fan Expo Dallas, and she has appeared as a musical guest at Anime Festival Asia and at conventions such as Anime NYC 2023.
Major-label signing and the first solo concert
On April 4, 2022, Universal Music Japan announced that Calliope had signed with EMI Records, which Anime Corner described as her major-label debut, coming shortly after her first full-length album UnAlive. The announcement placed her among the first VTubers on a major label, pointed to her strong streaming numbers, and revealed the first releases: the EP Shinigami Note and its track “CapSule,” performed with Hoshimachi Suisei and written and produced by DECO*27 with arrangement by Naoki Itai.
The EP’s release on July 20 was followed the next day by her first solo concert, the Major Debut Concert “New Underworld Order,” on July 21, 2022 at Toyosu PIT, with the stream starting at 6:30 PM JST and the show at 7:00 PM JST. According to the official page, the stream was sold through SPWN at 5,000 yen (tax included) from May 11 to August 21, 2022, and the archive was available until the same deadline. Guests were Hoshimachi Suisei, Tsunomaki Watame, Gawr Gura and TeddyLoid; Gura joined for “Q,” Suisei performed “CapSule” and “Wicked feat. Mori Calliope,” and Watame joined for “Cloudy sheep feat. Mori Calliope.” The concert closed with “Excuse My Rudeness, But Could You Please RIP?” It is a good example of how a hololive live can combine solo songs with cross-unit guests, a theme also seen in our pages on Hoshimachi Suisei and Tsunomaki Watame.
Her Japanese name
One small detail for readers who see her name written in Japanese: on September 1, 2021, COVER announced that her Japanese name would change from 森 美声 (written in kanji) to 森 カリオペ (written in katakana). Both are read “Mori Kariope,” and her English name did not change.
Collaborations and related talents
Her -Myth- colleagues are Gawr Gura, Ninomae Ina’nis, Takanashi Kiara and Amelia Watson. She has released collaborations with Gawr Gura (“Q”), Hoshimachi Suisei (“CapSule”, see Hoshimachi Suisei), Kobo Kanaeru and the band Zutomayo (“Kira Killer”), among others.
Awards
She won Best Music VTuber at the 2023 VTuber Awards and was nominated again in 2024; she was also nominated for Best VTuber at the 2025 Streamer Awards.
