Sony Ends mocopi link App: What Motion-Capture Users Need to Know
At a glance
- What happened: Sony has ended distribution of “mocopi link”, the smartphone app that relays data from mocopi motion-capture sensors to a PC application.
- Dates: Sony’s original notice (October 27, 2025) gives October 28, 2026 as the date the app is removed from the App Store and Google Play. Japanese outlet MoguLive, reporting on October 31, 2026, says the removal took effect on October 30. We could not reconcile the two-day difference.
- Who is affected: people who use mocopi with the mocopi PC app, mocopi VR or XYN Motion Studio, which includes VTubers who use the sensors for full-body tracking.
- What replaces it: the Sensor Data Receiver for mocopi (model QM-PR1), a separate hardware receiver.
Sony has retired the smartphone app that many mocopi owners used to connect their body-tracking sensors to a computer. Existing installs keep working, but the app can no longer be downloaded again once removed, and Sony will not update or support it. Here is what the company has said, what it means for streamers who use the sensors, and what remains unclear.
Background: what mocopi link does
mocopi is Sony’s compact motion-capture system, in which small wearable sensors track body movement without cameras. Sony’s help guide describes mocopi link as the smartphone app that receives sensor data and forwards it to the mocopi PC application, so that motion capture can run on a computer. According to the guide, the data can travel from the phone to the PC over a USB cable or wirelessly. For avatar users, this chain is what allows a body to be animated in a streaming or VR setup. The app was available on both the App Store and Google Play.
What Sony announced
Sony announced the end of distribution and support for mocopi link on its XYN news page on October 27, 2025, almost a year in advance. The notice says the company is consolidating the way mocopi connects to its PC applications, using the Sensor Data Receiver for mocopi, in order to provide a stable connection regardless of smartphone model. The affected PC applications are mocopi (the PC app), mocopi VR and XYN Motion Studio.
The key points of the notice are as follows:
- The app is removed from the App Store and Google Play on the scheduled date, after which it cannot be downloaded again. If you uninstall it, you cannot reinstall it from the store.
- Existing installations can still be used, but there will be no future updates or support.
- After their next update, the PC applications will stop supporting connections through mocopi link. To keep using the phone app route, the notice advises skipping future PC app updates or downloading an archived version that still supports it.
- Archived PC app versions remain available from Sony’s website, but they will not receive new features.
MoguLive’s report adds that the last mocopi link-compatible versions are available as archived downloads from the XYN Web Portal Site, and that using the latest PC apps requires the Sensor Data Receiver. Sony customer support is the contact point for questions.
The date discrepancy
Sony’s 2025 notice states that the app would be removed on October 28, 2026 and that archived PC app versions would be available until that date. MoguLive’s article, published on October 31, 2026, says the app was removed from the stores on October 30. The difference may reflect a rollout delay or a different time-zone or reporting convention, but neither source explains it. If you depend on the archived PC versions, check the XYN page directly rather than relying on either date.
What it means for VTubers and avatar users
Many streamers use mocopi for body tracking, and the practical advice follows from the notice. If your setup already works, there is no immediate break: keep the phone app installed and avoid updating the PC application until you have decided how to proceed. If you are setting up a new phone, or you have uninstalled the app, you will not be able to get it from the stores. In the longer term, users who want to stay on the current PC software will need the Sensor Data Receiver, which Sony positions as the stable connection method. The notice does not give a price or setup instructions for the receiver, and we have not verified either, so check Sony’s product page before you buy.
What we don’t know yet
- The reason for the two-day gap between Sony’s stated date and the MoguLive report.
- How long archived PC app versions will remain downloadable. Sony’s notice mentions availability until October 28, 2026 for one archive statement, while MoguLive describes archived downloads as available without an end date.
- Whether and when third-party avatar software will add direct support for the receiver. Neither source addresses this.
- The price and regional availability of the Sensor Data Receiver.
