Japan’s virtual talent scene is huge, fast-moving, and easy to bounce off if you don’t know where to begin. Who are the big agencies? Do you need to understand Japanese? Which streams are worth your first hour? This guide covers the basics so you can start watching with confidence.

Kizuna AI, the character often credited with popularizing the term “Virtual YouTuber”.

What is a VTuber?

A VTuber (short for “virtual YouTuber”) is an online entertainer who performs as a computer-generated avatar instead of showing their own face. Most VTubers use motion or face tracking so the avatar mirrors their expressions and movements in real time, and they perform live on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch.

The term comes from Kizuna AI, who began posting on YouTube in late 2016 and described herself as a “virtual YouTuber.” Her popularity set off a wave of new creators, and the word stuck as a label for the whole category.

A very short history

  • 2016–2018: Kizuna AI’s debut sparks the first VTuber boom. Early VTubers mostly published edited videos.
  • Late 2010s: Agencies arrive and shift the format toward regular livestreaming. NIJISANJI helped popularize Live2D-style avatars and live streaming, while Cover Corporation, a company that had been working on AR/VR software, turned its attention to VTubers and built hololive.
  • 2020 onward: Major agencies open branches aimed at overseas audiences, which is why so much VTuber content is now available in English.

Agencies and independents

Most VTubers fall into one of two groups.

Agency VTubers are managed by a company that handles production, promotion, merchandise, and events.

  • hololive production is operated by Cover Corporation. The brand was formed on December 2, 2019, when the all-female hololive group, the all-male Holostars group, and the INoNaKa music label were brought together under one name. It has branches for Japanese, Indonesian, and English-speaking audiences, plus the music-focused hololive DEV_IS branch that debuted in 2023.
  • NIJISANJI is operated by ANYCOLOR. It is known for a large roster of talents. Its English-language branch, NIJISANJI EN, debuted in May 2021 with overseas fans in mind.

Independent VTubers work without a large agency. Their size ranges from tiny hobby channels to very popular creators, and many smaller agencies and collectives sit in between.

Where English speakers can start

You do not need to understand Japanese to enjoy this scene.

  1. Start with an English-language branch. hololive English (debuted September 2020) and NIJISANJI EN stream mainly in English. hololive Indonesia talents mix Indonesian, English, and Japanese depending on the person.
  2. Pick by content, not by agency. Some VTubers focus on games, others on singing, talk streams, or variety shows. Search for the kind of content you already enjoy.
  3. Try clips before long streams. Clips are short, and many fans publish translated highlights of Japanese-language streams. Check the clip creator’s permissions and credit before sharing them.
  4. Follow official schedules. Agencies and talents post stream schedules on X (formerly Twitter) and on YouTube, usually in Japan Standard Time. Convert times carefully.
  5. Use subtitles as a helper. YouTube’s automatic captions and translation are imperfect, but they are enough to follow the gist of many streams.

Good habits for new fans

  • Respect the persona. VTubers present a character. Speculating about the person behind the avatar, their private life, or their identity is considered rude and can cause real harm.
  • Read the fan-content guidelines. Agencies publish rules for clips, fan art, and monetization. Check them before you post anything based on a stream.
  • Be careful with spoilers and chat behavior. Live chat moves fast. Keep it friendly and follow the channel’s moderation rules.
